  When Times Get Rough
  Brian Zimerman 12-29-2009

When Times Get Rough, You’ll Learn Who Your True Friends Are REALLY Fast.

Everyday around noon I hop into my car to drive to do a crossfit workout at my local crossfit gym. (Check it out if you want to learn what a crossfit workout is. The gym I go to is MBSCrossfit.com. It’s the ultimate workout.) On my way into the gym I listened to the ESPN talk radio show Burning With Rohn. The other day they had Charles Barkley on the air.  They were talking about Tiger Woods. What caught my attention is they started talking about how when people start going through rough times in life (like Tiger Woods is going through now) you’ll start to notice who your friends really are.

As soon as I heard this I could instantly relate. I remember going through many challenging times in life and for whatever reason my real friends would emerge to my aid. What I learned was that friends that I never expected to reach out were the ones that reached out. About a year and half ago I went through some rough financial times where I was straight up broke.  I short sold my home, my car was repo’d and I had to find my two boxers a new home because I was homeless and I could no longer take care of them.

It was pretty much a low part of my life, yet it gave me the greatest lessons I could ever learn.  I can look back at it now and be actually grateful for it. One thing I learned though was that my true friends really gave me a shoulder to lean on. I had friends reaching out to me that I thought would never reach out.  And I had friends that I thought would reach out that never did. It taught me many things about life.

For the friends I thought would reach out that never did, it was ok. I didn’t get mad at them.  It was just something I took note of. For the friends that did come out, it provided a sense of security and confidence that just made me feel stronger and better about myself.  Later it actually gave me the confidence to grab the bull by the horns and start building a business again.

I feel that it’s important to be that friend to your friends that reaches out and provides support whether it’s a shoulder to cry on or a couch for a good pal to sleep on. It’s good to step out of your life and into someone else’s. Understand that your life may be going through some tough times, but you’ll learn that your friends and the people you’re close to are generally feeling the tides of life as well. I suggest taking some time and asking questions to see if there’s something you can do for your friends because there may be a time when you need them.

That day when I was listening to that sports talk radio show the host of the show, Jim Rohn, said this, “You’ll notice that in life when you go through certain situations and obstacles you start to learn who your friends really are.”

I guess my point of this article is to step out and be that friend to someone this week. I promise if you get out of your head and out of your life for just a few minutes, and you take the time to step into a friend’s life, you start to learn things you never knew because you probably never asked.  This way you’ll become that friend your friend was seeking. You can become the friend that would allow your friend to step out and maybe take some action that they normally would not have taken.
